Affecting one in seven young people, early school leaving (ESL) is one of the main educational challenges in Europe, and reducing its levels is a shared objective of EUcountries.
This site presents the outcomes from the conference organised by the European Commission on 1-2 March 2012 which brought together more than 300 practitioners, researchers and policy makers to discuss ways of addressing early school leaving.
Fundamental issues were addressed such as the challenges of developing a sufficient evidence-base for better targeted policies against early school leaving, of establishing cross-sectoral cooperation, of addressing drop-out from vocational education and training, and of promoting different forms of learning to retain disengaged young people in education and training.
22 concrete examples of successful initiatives were the object of an exhibition.
