Conference on the EU Pillar of Social Rights
The
European Commission organised an high level conference following the adoption
of a report on the European Pillar of Social Rights in Brussels on 23 January
2017. The event was designed to highlight the commitment of Jean-Claude Juncker
to establishing the Social Pillar of the EU, or more precisely of the Euro Zone
for the time being. Social Platform members, including EPA were invited, but
were offered little space, for example there were only representatives of other
social partners, employers and trade unions in the closing panel. However, the
commitment was made absolutely clear by the fact that 9 EU Commissioners,
Members of the European Parliament, leaders of the European Economic and Social
Committee (EESC), the Committee of Regions (CoR), UNESCO, OECD, the European
Central Bank and several national ministers attended and contributed to the
event that concluded with the first public speech by the new President of the
European Parliament, Antonio Tajani and President of the European Commission,
Jean-Claude Juncker.

Parents’ contribution to the European public consultation on ‘challenges of work-life balance’
The European Commission
launched a public consultation on a roadmap on ‘possible action to address the
challenges of work-life balance faced by working parents and caregivers’. The
roadmap openly declares that “the main reason behind the initiative is to
address the low participation of women in the labour market by modernising and
adapting the current EU legal and policy framework to today's labour market”.
On behalf of European parents, EPA as a registered lobby organisation
contributed to the public consultation emphasising that issues of
reconciliation parents are facing are much broader than measures pushing women
to participate at the labour market. First of all, it is important for us to
demand the use of another phrase ‘work-life balance’ as it suggests that work
is not part of life while it is.

Press release: Representing parents in Europe: the first 30 years
The European Parents’ Association
(EPA) is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. Our November
conference – co-organised and hosted by our Luxembourgish member, FAPEL -,
taking place in the EU Presidency country, Luxembourg is aiming at taking stock
of the state of play and highlighting some of the areas to be developed in the
field of parental involvement. A Manifesto about the direction of parents’
representation for the years to come is launched at the event.
In our event we will revisit the
past 30 years, present the results of two recent Europe-wide surveys on
parental involvement and school costs, with special focus on the achievements
of the past 15 years and give the floor to our members to share their
experiences and try to find answers to our questions.

Families in the Crisis: Finding work-life balance in difficult economic context
The first official event of the Year of Reconciling Work and Family Life was held on 29th April in Athens under the Greek Presidency of the European Union. The event started with an opening speech delivered by László Andor, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion who acknowledged the difficult situation families got into as a result of the crisis and austerity measures, but at the same time emphasised that families - including parents - are in the focus of policy makers in Europe. The basis of the conference was the new publication of Eurofound, Quality of life in Europe: Families in the economic crisis.
